Sylvean Biotech represents SA in international panel discussion
4 April 2007

Director of Maxum tenant company Sylvean Biotech, Anton Jordaan, recently returned from France where he represented the South African Biotechnology industry in a panel discussion during the 2007 BioSquare and BioVision Conferences. The panel discussion was on European-South African cooperation in FP7, the current Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development set up by the European Union (EU).

In his presentation, Jordaan asserted that in partnering on FP7 projects, Europe should see South African biotech companies as more than just implementation partners and rather as valuable conceptual contributors as well.

The visit to France also gave the South African delegation insights into the French system for innovation support. Jordaan points out that a few years ago France was not very highly ranked or competitive in the European Biotech stakes, but through a move initiated by the country’s Biotech industry, the country managed to effect a complete turnaround. "There is a lot that South Africa can learn from the French example, and these are lessons that we can use to launch ourselves into a brand new Biotech echelon", says Jordaan.

Plans are currently underway to present a proposal to the Department of Science and Technology based on the South African delegation’s observations while in France and Sylvean Biotech will play an active role in formulating the recommendations put forward in that document.

Stem-cell research and the law
29 January 2007

Stem-cell research is a highly topical and controversial issue worldwide. As the massive medical and economic potential of stem-cell research became apparent, some countries have begun to promote this research through research-friendly regulatory regimes and other incentives such as grants and subsidies. In South Africa, the National Health Act of 2003 makes provision for stem-cell research, subject to regulations. However, stem-cell research in South Africa has been waiting in limbo ever since, as the Department of Health is still busy drafting these regulations.

In an effort to contribute constructively to and hopefully speed up this drafting process, Sylvean Biotech's director for legal affairs, Adv Donrich Jordaan, has submitted a 30-page position paper to the Department of Health on the 25th of January 2007. Donrich Jordaan is also part-time head of the research unit for policy studies at the University of Pretoria, and publishes regularly on the subject of biolaw and bioethics in both academic journals and the popular press. The position paper analyses the legal position in several other countries and concludes with concrete policy recommendations on specific criteria for stem-cell research. Practical recommendations on regulatory structures for stem-cell research are also made.

"The position paper was received very positively by the Department," comments Adv Jordaan. "Provided certain important ethical guidelines are met, I hope that stem-cell research will soon take off in South Africa. Our country needs to build expertise in the field. We owe it to future generations to seriously explore the opportunities offered by stem-cell research."

Exciting new IP to be commercialised
13 November 2006

The University of Pretoria has awarded Sylvean Biotech an exclusive license to commercialise a groundbreaking patent for the production of Ting, a non-alcoholic fermented porridge traditional to the Limpopo province. The research was done in the labs of Prof Eugene Cloete, and scientific taste tests were conducted by the Department of Dietary Science. Currently Ting is made using traditional brewing methods, resulting in different tasting brews. The research isolated a biological agent that consistently provides the best tasting Ting. Sylvean Biotech will now take up the challenge of commercialising this patent - we hope to soon have our Ting in the shops all over the Limpopo province!
